Adrift: Shocking Story of Survival.

Throughout history, there have been stories of feats of extraordinary courage and sheer willpower that have both shocked us, and also helped us to appreciate the hands that life has dealt us. These stories have also served as inspiration as to the lengths that people will go to get themselves out of hopeless situations.

From the many documentaries of such awe-inspiring stories, they probably are just but a few of such stories to ever come to light. These people endured torrid times and lived to tell their stories. Yes, you may be going through some things, but there are other people who could be having it worse than you.

In the Path of a Hurricane

Perhaps one of those people who could have endured a much more torrid time than you is Tami Oldham Ashcraft. You may be going through some things on land, but she had to face her worst nightmares out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, right in the middle of a hurricane.

Like any person in love, Oldham decided to follow her then fiancé on a journey across the Pacific. The person she was to get married to was an accomplished British sailor by the name of Richard Sharp. Their task was simple. Take a yacht from a harbor in Tahiti, sail across the Pacific and deliver it to San Diego. What could go wrong?

So, the couple decided to take on the task and they set of for San Diego from Tahiti. At the time they were sailing, mother nature had decided to throw one of her tempers and it came in the form of Hurricane Raymond. The couple plotted their route wisely and it was in their best interest to avoid meeting up with the hurricane.

Out in the middle of nowhere, minding their own business and enjoying each other’s company, what a way to spend time with the person you are going to marry. The mother nature decides to switch things up a bit, and send the hurricane away from the predicted path, and into the path of the yacht.

Disaster

The couple attempted to change course and turn the yacht north to stop the hurricane from catching up with them. But that was in vain. Instead, they were battling 40-foot waves which was difficult on their yacht. Richard realized they were not going to outrun the hurricane, he sent his girlfriend below decks, and clipped a harness to himself and tied it onto the boat.

Oldham was being thrown about in the galley, and she heard Richard shout “Oh My God.” The boat rocked and she hit her head on the cabin walls. She blacked out from the impact and didn’t back to her senses for an entire day.

On recovering her consciousness, feeling very weak, she realized she was injured. She went on deck only to discover that Richard had been tossed free of the harness and was nowhere to be found. She was alone, and the boat was adrift. The yacht had been severely damaged and she could no longer rely on onboard communications and navigation system. Regaining her strength little by little, she found the will to survive.

So, she fashioned a small sail out of materials available and used a sextant to help guide her. For another 41 days, she was sailing. This time, not towards San Diego, but to the nearest landmass: Hawaii, where she was able to dock safely and get help.

Despite all this, she still enjoys sailing today, and the book she wrote about her survival was made into a thrilling feature film.

How to stay safe when traveling as a solo female

There are always safety issues to keep in mind even for the most experience travelers. If you’re traveling alone in Europe, you can and should feel completely secure. If you want to ditch the resorts and explore the off the beaten tracks of Spain, Austria or Croatia, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

As long as you’re willing to do your due diligence and trust your gut, travelling in Europe should be one of the safest (and most fun) experiences of your life. Here are our most recommended safety tips for women traveling solo.

Come prepared

Make sure to check your accommodation before booking. Read guest reviews on multiple independent websites and don’t choose an Airbnb host that doesn’t have many reviews.

Most ladies will already be using travel websites to discover the coolest restaurants or find out what museums are free in their chosen location. However, this is a great chance to check out safety information.

Ask which neighbourhoods you should avoid at night, whether public transport is reliable, and what the licensed taxis look like. Also, find out the nearest medical centre or hospital to your accommodation – you never know when you might need it.

Put yourself first

Women travelling alone can be easy prey for con artists, sexual assaulters, and other criminals. While the blame is wholly on the criminal, there are some steps you can take to protect yourself:

  • Check in regularly with someone back home by video chat. Also, give them copies of your passport, the address of where you’ll be staying, and a rough itinerary.
  • In a bar, don’t let someone buy you or hand you a drink, buy your drinks yourself, and avoid drugs (even if it’s legal in your host country).
  • Don’t leave your valuables with anyone you meet.
  • Blend in with the locals by choosing clothes that reflect the sensibilities of that location.
  • Rent a car rather than relying on public transport or taxis, especially in parts of a city you don’t know. The money is worth your safety and it could even save you money over the holiday.
  • If you decide to spend the night with someone, use contraception that you brought, and take them to your accommodation.

Look after your valuables

Even if you’ve probably already leaving stuff like your mother’s diamond earrings at home, you’ll probably have some expensive electronics, your passport, and perhaps a fair amount of cash on you when travelling.

  • Limit the amount you take on holiday; use credit cards instead of cash, take a book instead of your Kindle, and perhaps even take your old mobile phone instead of your iPhone. If not, make sure your gadgets are insured.
  • Keep what you can (including copies of your passport and your bank account information) in a locked safe in your accommodation
  • The stuff you do take out should be kept secure in a day bag (not your rucksack!) that you do not take off until you get back to your accommodation
  • Make sure you’re covered. Get travel insurance. This will also help if you need medical care or you have to fly home early

Being bored is actually good for your brain

Here’s something natural that happens to a lot of people. You may be at some place, say, your place of work, handling whatever you do every day. At some point in your daily tasks, you get this feeling that whatever you’re doing isn’t really worth paying attention to, or maybe it is absolutely dull to the point you feel like driving a nail through your hand to find something interesting.

However, without boredom, it would actually be impossible to attain some levels of enlightenment in life. Bouts of boredom are actually very necessary if you want to develop into an all encompassing intellectual. Here’s why…

Boredom is a key driver of creativity.

It’s no secret that the Roman Catholic Church did everything in their power to keep a hold of their people. They resorted to things such as performing mass in Latin, even for non-Latin speakers. They’re also the originators of the phrase “An idle mind is the devil’s workshop.”

This is because as people get bored, they tend to do crazy things, such as challenge the authority of the Romans. Those crazy things aren’t just random occurrences, they are well planned out thoughts.

For years, Albert Einstein worked at the Patents office in Switzerland. This freed up his brain to work on various papers that he was developing. In 1905, he published papers that astonished the academic world. He even described his time there as his most productive.

Boredom is a catalyst for creative thinking and problem solving as it allows the mind to wander, and even day dream.

Boredom is necessary for excellent mental health.

Whether there has been an increase of these conditions, or whether we’re now more accepting of mental issues as serious medical problems, the fact remains that there are now a serious amount of anxiety and depression cases being treated by mental health specialists.

Although there are now more innovative ways to treat the aforementioned issues, it doesn’t mean that people shouldn’t work towards preventing them. Taking a break from stressful events is highly recommended. Other methods such as practicing mindfulness and yoga have helped people deal with those issues.

The one that is rarely mentioned is boredom. A good bout of boredom can help take our minds away from the things that stress us. An almost immediate effect of boredom is the fact that we tend to draw castles in the air; and this is a good thing as it takes your mind away from what’s been stressing you.

Another example is to walk away from all the screens you’ve been looking at.  Take some time away from your workstation, or the television screens and just take a walk. Don’t forget your pup.

While your pup is sniffing its way into exhaustion, your mind will be free to dream up the scenarios you’d be in if you were president, and how you’d creatively solve them, and still keep your approval rating in the high 70s.
